Moving to Alberta? How to Set Up Power and Gas

In Alberta your address sets who delivers your electricity and gas, and you choose who sells it to you. Find your wires company, gas company and town utilities office for 42 Alberta communities below, then set everything up in your first week.

Quotable facts

  • •Alberta lets households choose their electricity and natural gas retailer; the local wires and gas utility delivers either way.
  • •If you never pick a retailer, your home is served by the default provider: the Rate of Last Resort for electricity (about 12¢/kWh through December 31, 2026) and the monthly default rate for gas.
  • •An Alberta electricity site ID has 13 digits and a natural gas site ID has 10 digits; both are printed on any bill for the home.
  • •Water, sewer and garbage come from your municipality, not your energy retailer.

Moving to Alberta FAQ

How do I set up electricity when I move to Alberta?

Pick a retailer and sign up for your new address before you move in. You will need the address and move-in date, and a site ID if you have it (13 digits for electricity, 10 for natural gas, printed on any bill for that home). Your local wires company delivers the power whichever retailer you choose.

Who is my electricity provider in Alberta?

Two companies are involved. Your wires company is set by your address (FortisAlberta, ATCO Electric, or a city utility in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and a few other places). Your retailer, the company that sets your rate and sends the bill, is your choice.

What happens if I do not pick a retailer?

Your home is served by the default provider for its area. For electricity that is the Rate of Last Resort, about 12¢/kWh through December 31, 2026; for natural gas it is the default gas rate, reset every month. You can sign up with a retailer at any time.

Is Alberta's electricity market different from other provinces?

Yes. In Alberta you choose the company that sells you electricity and natural gas, and the wires and pipes stay with your local utility. Many other provinces have a single public utility that both delivers and sells power.

Who handles water, sewer and garbage?

Your town or city, not your energy retailer. Call the municipal utilities office (numbers in the table below for the towns we cover) to open an account in your name.

How long does it take to set up power and gas?

You can sign up with Bright Fire in as little as 4 minutes. The switch itself can take up to 10 to 30 days, so sign up as soon as you know your address and move-in date. Approval includes a credit check.

What if my new home is in a gas co-op area?

In gas co-op areas your natural gas comes through the co-op. You can still choose your electricity retailer.
