Most of an Alberta electricity bill is delivery charges that are the same no matter which retailer you sign with. The Bill Check splits your bill into the part you cannot change and the part you can, then shows you what that second part costs today.
Distribution and transmission (delivery), local access fees, and GST. Your wires company charges these on every bill, and they are identical with every retailer.

Distribution and transmission charges, local access fees, and GST are set by your wires company and the regulator, and they are the same on every retailer's bill. Comparing the energy charge on its own shows you the real difference between rates without mixing in costs nobody can change.
The Rate of Last Resort is Alberta's regulated default electricity rate. It is published by the Alberta Utilities Commission, set for a defined period, and it is what you pay if you have never chosen a retailer. Because it is regulated and public, a comparison against it stays accurate. Other retailers' rates change without notice, so we do not compare against them.
The Bill Check shows the variable plan (Market + 0.85¢/kWh) for context but does not put a dollar figure on it, because a variable rate follows the monthly Alberta market average and changes month to month. Comparing a moving rate with a fixed regulated rate would not be apples to apples. For context, big-name retailers typically add 1.5 to 2¢/kWh on top of the market price; Bright Fire adds 0.85¢.
