What Happens After You Sign Up With Bright Fire

After you sign up, Sponsor Energy runs a routine credit check, you may get an email if something is missing, and the switch itself can take up to 10 to 30 days. Your power never goes out along the way, because the same wires company keeps delivering it.

  • •Your power never goes out: the same wires company delivers it before and after the switch.
  • •No deposit on approved credit (OAC).
  • •No cancellation fee on residential electricity. Fixed residential natural gas has a $250 early exit fee.
  • •Questions at any step: (780) 779-7188 or customercare@brightfire.ca.

What to have ready before you sign up

Having these on hand keeps the application moving:

Common reasons an application waits are small and fixable: banking details that were not completed, an email asking for more information or a deposit that has not been answered yet, or an email address with a typo so the message never arrives. Double-check the address you typed and look in your junk folder.

The credit check: what the outcomes look like

Every application includes a routine credit check by Sponsor Energy. There are two common outcomes:

Approved

No deposit on approved credit (OAC), and no sign-up fee.

An email asking for something

Some applicants get an email asking for more information, or for a security deposit. A deposit is not a fee: it is held as security on your account.

If you get one of those emails, reply to it, or call (780) 779-7188 and our customer care team will explain what is being asked. We do not publish deposit amounts or credit thresholds because they depend on your application.

The switch: how long it takes and what stays the same

The switch itself can take up to 10 to 30 days. That window is set by the Alberta Utilities Commission and covers verification and your wires company's schedule. Sign-up speed and switch speed are two different things: the form can take as little as 4 minutes, the switch takes the time it takes.

While you wait, nothing changes at your home. The same wires company delivers your electricity, the same meter measures it, and the same outage line applies. You do not need to call your current retailer. If you are under a fixed-term contract with them right now, check its terms and end date before you sign up.

Not sure who delivers your power? See Who Supplies My Power? and Utility Companies in Alberta.

Your first bill and how you pay

Your bill arrives by email each month. It shows the energy charges from Bright Fire and the delivery charges from your wires or gas utility. Pre-authorized debit from your bank account is our preferred payment method, and payment is due seven days after the billing date. The billing cycle follows your meter reading date.

All Bright Fire plans include a $9.99 per month admin fee per site. Delivery charges, local access fees and GST are set by your wires company and the regulator and are the same with every retailer. Want to see the numbers first? The free Bill Check shows your energy charge on the regulated default rate next to Bright Fire's 1-year fixed rate.

If you change your mind: cancellation

There is no cancellation fee on residential electricity plans, fixed or variable. Fixed residential natural gas carries a $250 early exit fee, and variable residential natural gas has none. Business contracts have different terms, so call (780) 779-7188 before enrolling a business. Details on the No Cancellation Fees page.

After sign-up FAQ

How long after I sign up does my new rate start?

Sign-up takes as little as 4 minutes online, but the switch itself can take up to 10 to 30 days (Alberta Utilities Commission). The timing depends on the verification and your wires company's schedule, not on how fast you fill in the form.

Will my power go out while the switch happens?

No. The same wires company keeps delivering your electricity and the same meter keeps measuring it. Only the company that prices and bills the energy changes.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

No deposit is required on approved credit (OAC). Your application includes a routine credit check. If a security deposit applies to your account, you will be told, and a deposit is not a fee, it is held as security on your account. Our customer care team can walk you through it.

What if I get an email asking for more information?

Answer it as soon as you can. Common reasons an application waits include banking details for pre-authorized debit that were not completed, or an email asking for information or a deposit that has not been answered yet. Check your junk folder, and call (780) 779-7188 if you are not sure what is being asked.

Do I need to call my current retailer?

No. Bright Fire coordinates the switch with your wires company, so there is nothing to cancel on your end. If you are under a fixed-term contract right now, check its terms and end date before you sign up.

How will I be billed and how do I pay?

You receive a bill by email each month. Pre-authorized debit from your bank account is our preferred payment method. Payment is due seven days after the billing date, and the billing cycle follows your meter reading date.

Are there cancellation fees?

There is no cancellation fee on residential electricity plans, fixed or variable. Fixed residential natural gas carries a $250 early exit fee; variable residential natural gas has none. Business contracts have different terms, so call us before enrolling a business.

Who do I call if I have a question or a problem?

Bright Fire customer care at (780) 779-7188 or customercare@brightfire.ca. For a power outage or gas emergency, call your local wires or gas utility instead; the numbers are on the Utility Companies in Alberta page and on your current bill.
