Default Rate: Common Questions

What is the Rate of Last Resort?+
The Rate of Last Resort (RoLR) is Alberta's default electricity rate — it replaced the old Regulated Rate Option (RRO) on January 1, 2025. If you have never signed up with a competitive retailer, you are on it automatically. Unlike the old RRO, which changed monthly, the RoLR is fixed by the Alberta Utilities Commission for a two-year term: the current rates apply until December 31, 2026.
How much is the default rate right now?+
It depends on where you live: 12.01¢/kWh in the Edmonton area, 12.06¢/kWh in the Calgary area, and 12.02¢/kWh across most of northern and eastern Alberta. All three are fixed until December 31, 2026. Bright Fire's 1-year fixed rate is 8.29¢/kWh — roughly 3.7¢ less on the energy charge.
Am I locked into the default rate?+
No. The default rate has no contract, so you can switch to a competitive retailer at any time with no exit fee. And Bright Fire has no cancellation fee on residential electricity either, so switching doesn't lock you in.
