The Rate of Last Resort — Alberta’s default electricity rate — is 12.02¢/kWh until December 31, 2026 across most of northern and eastern Alberta, including Grande Prairie, Whitecourt, Fort McMurray, Peace River and Cold Lake. Bright Fire’s 1-year fixed rate is 8.29¢/kWh.
Default (Rate of Last Resort) figures are set by the Alberta Utilities Commission and published by the Utilities Consumer Advocate (ucahelps.alberta.ca); verified monthly. Comparison reflects the electricity energy charge only — delivery and admin charges apply on every bill, whoever you choose.
On the energy charge, 12.02¢ default vs 8.29¢ fixed is a 3.73¢/kWh gap. For a typical home using about 600 kWh a month, that works out to roughly $22.40 a month (about $269 a year) on the energy-charge line, based on current posted rates. See our Grande Prairie page for local wires and gas details, or all plans and rates.
