Alberta Energy Market Report
Published every Tuesday with data through the previous Sunday · Archive of all issues
A short weekly data post on Alberta's electricity market. Every issue has the same four parts, so week-to-week numbers are directly comparable, and every issue keeps a permanent link plus a machine-readable JSON file.
All Issues
What Is in Every Issue
- Headline numbers: AESO 30-day average pool price, last week's daily range, the regulated Rate of Last Resort (12.01 to 12.06 cents/kWh through December 31, 2026) and Bright Fire's current 1-year fixed rate.
- Alberta Bill Index: the energy-only portion of a typical household month (600 kWh) priced at the RoLR for each utility zone and at Bright Fire's 1-year fixed rate. Clearly labelled energy-only; delivery charges are identical no matter which retailer you choose and are not included. Variable plans are excluded from the bill math; the pool price is reported separately as market data only.
- What moved this week: two or three neutral bullets on demand and notable price hours, read from AESO data. No forecasts.
- Definitions, sources and notes: AESO, the Utilities Consumer Advocate and our rates page, with retrieval dates.
The Alberta Bill Index
The Alberta Bill Index is a simple, repeatable benchmark: 600 kWh multiplied by the rate. We publish it for the Rate of Last Resort in each Alberta utility zone (EPCOR Energy Alberta / FortisAlberta areas, ATCO Electric areas, and Calgary) and for Bright Fire's current 1-year fixed electricity rate. 600 kWh is a typical Alberta household's monthly electricity use; your own usage will differ.
Energy charge only
The index excludes delivery and transmission charges (set by your local wires company and the same on every retailer), administration fees (Bright Fire's is $9.99/month), rate riders, other retailer fees and GST. It is not a bill total. Variable plans are excluded because a variable rate moves with the monthly market price, so comparing it with a fixed regulated rate is not apples-to-apples. Past market prices do not predict future ones, and nothing in the series is a forecast or a guarantee of what any household will pay.
Method and Sources
- Pool price: AESO hourly pool price in $/MWh, converted to cents/kWh by dividing by 10. Daily and weekly figures are simple averages of the hourly prices (24 and 168 hours). The 30-day figure is AESO's 30-day rolling average at the last hour of the reporting week's Sunday. Source: AESO Pool Price Report.
- Demand: Alberta Internal Load (MW) from the same AESO report.
- Rate of Last Resort: Utilities Consumer Advocate default rates. Rates are set per zone until December 31, 2026 and will be re-checked when they change.
- Bright Fire rate: the 1-year fixed electricity rate shown on our rates page on the publication date. If our rate changes, later issues use the new rate; past issues are not edited.
